An Edinburgh knitwear label is making the case for clothes that fit the person rather than the other way round. Woolkind, the sustainable knitwear brand founded by Laurence Di Sotto, has launched its first collection of customisable garments, all handmade in its studio near the Meadows.

The new tank tops are knitted in-house using 100 per cent superfine merino wool, and every one is a bespoke piece, made to order in the customer's choice of colour, size and length. They are the first garments in the Woolkind range, which is already known for its scarves, wraps and accessories.

Customers can choose from Woolkind's signature soft wool in 21 colours, from bold brights and chalky pastels to neutrals, with the option to use different shades for the body, neckline and arms.

For those who cannot visit the light-filled studio for a fitting, an online customisation tool lets them design their own knitwear. Laurence has also developed a fit library, a sizing guide to help online shoppers choose their fit, whether tailored or oversized, cropped or longer. After a call-out on social media, scores of volunteers came to try on samples and match sizes and shapes, so that online customers can choose with confidence.

Laurence said she was excited to offer a custom experience to all her customers, and that the response to the fit library had been a true community effort, reflecting the Woolkind vision of making real clothes for real people. She loves meeting customers in the studio, she said, but knows that is not an option for everyone.

The brand describes itself as the antithesis of fast fashion. Everything is knitted in small batches or to order, with attention to detail, to create knitwear made to last. Its supply chain is fully traceable, and orders arrive in compostable packaging.

The collection celebrates diversity, individuality and size inclusivity, which is not always easy to find on the high street.

The tank tops can be ordered online or in person at the Woolkind studio, and appointments can be booked through the Woolkind website.
