Sarah Hutchison has been adorning Edinburgh with her jewellery since 2011. The artist and owner of SH Jewellery in Morningside has also found a new way to keep beautiful pieces in circulation, with a preloved collection that has grown fast.

Sarah launched the preloved arm of her business in autumn 2023, initially running it solely on Instagram at @sh_chance_to_sparkle. In under two years, more than 1,200 pieces of contemporary handmade jewellery have been listed, and more than 75 per cent have found new homes.

The idea is to give unworn, contemporary handmade pieces a second chance to be enjoyed, while helping to address sustainability in the jewellery industry and offering enthusiasts unique pieces at reduced prices. Pieces range from handmade earrings for under £20 to platinum and gold pieces with precious stones.

The collection has attracted work from notable names, including Ruth Tomlinson, Graeme McColm and Jack Cunningham, alongside pieces by local makers. Among the highlights was a rare and highly collectable Wendy Ramshaw ring stack, complete with its Perspex stand, the second Ramshaw piece Sarah had offered in a single month. She said pieces like that would usually only come up at auction, and that she saw collectors' interest as a real endorsement of the project.

Sarah, who is originally from East Lothian, studied at Edinburgh College of Art before moving to London to run a gallery, returning to Edinburgh more than a decade ago. She now spends time each week adding to the preloved collection on her website.

She is also helping to shape the next chapter for jewellery in the city. Sarah is one of the four women behind Alchemy: Goldsmiths Scotland, a new fair of contemporary jewellery and silver coming to the City Art Centre in April 2027, which will bring together 50 jewellers and silversmiths from across the UK.

Anyone with unworn jewellery to sell can contact Sarah through SH Jewellery or the Instagram page.

The preloved collection can be browsed on Instagram at @sh_chance_to_sparkle and on the SH Jewellery website.
