Early birds and night owls in the west of the city have a new place to train. JD Gyms has opened its 24-hour gym at Edinburgh West Retail Park in Chesser, and the company's website now lists the Edinburgh Chesser club as open.

The gym operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It features a large free-weights area, plate-loaded Hammer Strength machines, specialised lifting platforms and Matrix cardio equipment.

The changing rooms include separate male and female saunas, and members get two and a half hours of free parking. The layout is aimed squarely at strength training, with platforms and plate-loaded kit alongside the cardio floor.

Ahead of the launch, JD Gyms released 200 early-bird memberships offering the first month for £5, before moving to a contract-free monthly rate of £26.99. Lee Matthews, chief operating officer, said the company was excited to bring its experience to Chesser. He said JD Gyms had invested heavily to create a facility offering premium equipment, great fitness spaces and value for money.

The opening comes as demand for flexible training grows. JD Gyms pointed to a 311 per cent rise in regional online searches for local Edinburgh gyms over the three months before the announcement, reflecting appetite across the city for round-the-clock training spaces.

For shift workers, parents fitting a session around the school run and anyone who prefers a quiet gym late at night, 24-hour access can make the difference between training regularly and not at all.

The Chesser club joins the company's existing Edinburgh West gym, giving members in the west of the city two options. JD Gyms clubs generally offer free weights, cardio machines, functional training areas and classes, although the company notes that facilities vary by location, so it is worth checking the details for the Chesser site before signing up.

For the retail park, the gym adds another reason to visit beyond the shops, and for the wider Chesser and Gorgie area it means another option for keeping active close to home.

Membership options and opening details for the Edinburgh Chesser gym are on the JD Gyms website.
