Fidra Fine Art in Gullane hosts Surface, a 24-artist show from Visual Arts Scotland

A village gallery on the East Lothian coast is hosting one of its broadest exhibitions to date. Surface, featuring work by 24 professional members of Visual Arts Scotland, opened at Fidra Fine Art in Gullane in October and runs until 29 November.
Visual Arts Scotland was founded in 1924 as the Scottish Society of Women Artists and has grown to more than 1,000 members, representing a wide range of contemporary visual art.
The exhibition brings together ceramics, papier mache sculpture, wooden constructions, glass, tapestry, printmaking and many styles of painting. A spokesperson for the gallery described it as probably the most varied exhibition it has ever staged.
Among the 24 artists are Lynn McGregor RSW, whose acrylic Shoreline, September is on show, Gillian A McFarland, who works with blown and pulled glass, and Charles Young, whose House Shrine combines wood, glass and brass. Other exhibitors include Aileen Keith, Ailsa Magnus, Chris Brook, Joyce Gunn Cairns, Jane Hunter, Lorraine Robson and Sarah Knox.
The list also includes Alison Burt, Amanda Gizzi, Evie Rose Thornton, Genevieve Draper, Jade Stout, Jo Fleming Smith, Jo Gifford, Julie Barnes, Kinga Elliot, Lindsey Lavender, Margaretann Bennett, Nicky Sanderson, Nicola McInally and Sandra Vick, which gives a sense of the range of makers involved.
The show opened with a meet-the-artists afternoon, and the gallery has suggested that visitors might find a unique handcrafted piece to give as a Christmas present.
Fidra Fine Art is based on Main Street in Gullane, around four miles along the coast from North Berwick and a short drive from central Edinburgh. The gallery has a keen interest in both traditional and contemporary Scottish art. It shows work by some of the finest artists working in Scotland today and also holds work by significant Scottish artists from the past hundred years.
With the beaches and golf courses of Gullane on the doorstep, a visit makes an easy autumn day out from the city, and the variety of work on show means there is something for every taste. For anyone who cannot make the trip, the full collection can be viewed online.
Surface is at Fidra Fine Art, Main Street, Gullane, until 29 November, and the exhibition can be browsed on the gallery's website.
