Edinburgh Monarchs speedway regain the Scottish Cup as the Academy completes a perfect season

It was a season to remember for speedway fans in West Lothian. Edinburgh Monarchs signed off their 2026 campaign at Armadale by regaining the Scottish Cup, beating Glasgow Tigers 47-42 on the night to complete an 11-point aggregate victory.
The result meant the Monarchs stayed unbeaten against their great rivals throughout 2026, with three wins and three draws. Kye Thomson top-scored with 12 points in the second leg and will stay with the club next season, while reserve Jordy Loftus impressed with eight points and three bonus.
Conditions were wet, but manager Alex Harkess said the night went very well and called it an excellent way to finish. He said gating became more important as the evening went on and that his riders gated well in the big races, with a 5-1 in heat 14 taking the pressure off. The club thanked fans for their support in what it called a highly enjoyable year that delivered silverware.
There was more to celebrate a week later. Monarchs Academy completed a historic season by beating Leicester Lion Cubs 53-37 to make it ten wins out of ten in the WSRA National Development League. Having already won the league, team manager Scott Wilson said the goal became going unbeaten, and the riders were driven all the way to heat 15. The Academy finished with an average winning margin of more than 20 points per meeting.
Captain Paco Castagna also added to the good news by being crowned Italian champion for a sixth time.
The Monarchs race at the West Lothian Community New Stadium in Armadale. Even with the bikes silent for the winter, the club has confirmed a programme of events for the closed season, and supporters can get involved through the fans' trust, kids' club and other schemes.
For a club with a loyal following, ending the year with a trophy and an unbeaten development side bodes well for 2027.
News, winter events and details of next season are on the Edinburgh Monarchs website.
