Dunmuir Hotel in Dunbar wins a bronze Green Tourism Award

A family-run hotel in Dunbar has taken a step towards a greener future. The Dunmuir Hotel on Newhouse Terrace has been awarded a bronze Green Tourism Award, after staff worked alongside East Lothian Council with a view to joining the Green Tourism scheme.

Owner Philip Mellor, who took on the business with his wife Lesley more than a decade ago, said the team was incredibly proud to have taken the step towards making the hotel a more sustainable and environmentally conscious business. There had been plenty of work going on behind the scenes, he said, from looking at how the hotel uses energy and water to reducing waste and making more responsible choices wherever possible.

He thanked his team for embracing the changes and said the bronze award was just the beginning, with further steps planned as the hotel continues to learn and improve.

The Dunmuir describes itself as a multi-award-winning three-star family hotel. It is home to the 1902 Bar and Grill, which the hotel says is the only restaurant in Dunbar to hold an AA Rosette for its cuisine. As well as rooms for visitors exploring the town, it offers dining for locals, and its festive menu and Christmas dining are already being promoted for the season ahead. Philip and Lesley have run the hotel as a family business for more than ten years, and the green award adds to the hotel's existing list of accolades.

For a small, independent hotel, achieving the award is a sign of real commitment from the whole team, and the owners see it as the first step on a longer journey.

Dunbar itself has plenty to offer visitors, from its harbour and coastline to the nearby John Muir Country Park, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. A comfortable base in the town makes it easy to explore the East Lothian coast at a gentle pace.
