Viewers across the country got a taste of East Lothian's coastline when Drift, the clifftop cafe at Canty Bay near North Berwick, featured in the opening episode of a new More4 series.

Scotland's Golden Coast is a five-part documentary that follows people who live and work along Scotland's east coast during the busy summer season, showcasing the landscapes, communities and businesses of the region.

Jo and Stuart McNicol, the owners of Drift, gave viewers a look behind the scenes at the bustling cafe. The programme also explored Stuart's work at Castleton Farm, which has been run by the McNicol family since 1908, and showed how diversification has become an important part of the family business.

Drift describes itself as a farm diversification business born out of a passion for food and drink. Everything is freshly made, from cakes and scones to soup and brunch, often using recipes that have been in the family for generations. Breakfast, brunch and lunch dishes are cooked to order, with as much Scottish produce as possible, and menus change with the seasons. In recent years the business has also added a sauna. The family say they love strengthening the connections between the land, the sea and the table, and much of what they serve reflects that farming background.

The setting is a big part of the appeal. Drift looks out over miles of Firth of Forth coastline towards the Bass Rock and is around half a mile from Tantallon Castle, which makes it popular with walkers, cyclists and day trippers as well as locals.

The first episode also visited Lunan Bay in Angus and Tentsmuir Forest in Fife. East Lothian viewers have more to look forward to, as the second series is due on screens in 2027, with North Berwick and Dunbar both set to feature.

For anyone who has queued for a coffee with a view at Drift, it was a chance to see the family and farm behind it. Episode one is available on the Channel 4 website.
