Leith's waterfront has added a continental accent with the opening of Chez Bernard, which its owners describe as the area's first French wine bar. The bistro sits at 38 Shore, just off Bernard Street, and opened this summer.

It is run by couple Jonathan Heredia and Isla Mosquera, who have 15 years of combined experience in hospitality. The bar is named in honour of Jonathan's grandfather Bernard, and the location just off Bernard Street was chosen partly as a nod to him.

Jonathan spent childhood summers near the Atlantic coast of France, and those holidays shaped the idea behind the venue: traditional long lunches, good wine and time spent around the table. He has said Chez Bernard is deeply personal for the couple, a tribute to his grandfather and to the simple moments that shaped his love of food and wine. When the space became available, he said, it felt like fate.

The menu is built around classic French sharing plates. Diners can expect fresh oysters, salmon and dressed crab, artisan French cheeses and charcuterie, along with hot dishes and further plates to share. The wine list has been put together to complement the seafood and sharing platters, and the menu is designed to suit a solo diner after a quick bite as well as groups settling in for the evening.

Chez Bernard is open seven days a week from noon until late, and families and children are welcome for afternoon grazing as well as evening meals.

The opening was also picked up by The List in its September food and drink round-up, which noted Chez Bernard alongside other new arrivals in Leith and encouraged readers to head down to the waterfront and try somewhere new. The Shore has long been one of the city's most popular dining streets, and the couple say they want to bring a little continental warmth to it.

For anyone looking for a slow lunch by the Water of Leith, it is a welcome addition.
