It has been quite a year for Abercorn Sports Club in Willowbrae. The club, best known for tennis and squash, has collected a string of league successes, staged a lively finals day and launched its first ever competitive table tennis team.

On the tennis courts, Abercorn fielded four men's and four women's teams in the VMH Solicitors East of Scotland leagues this summer. The men's 2nds won Division 8, the 3rds won Division 10 and the 4ths won Division 11, while the first team finished as runners-up to win promotion to Division 4. On the women's side, the 2nds were promoted to Division 6 and the 1sts, 3rds and 4ths all held their places.

The club's annual tournament finals day followed in the autumn. Club president Chloe Madeley not only helped promote the event but defended her ladies' singles title, beating Alice Eaves 6-2, 6-4. Mirko Canevaro won the men's singles, beating Robin Burns 6-4, 6-1. The busiest player of the day was Jamie Irving, who won the men's doubles with George Callaghan and the mixed doubles with Agata Nawrocka, and also reached the final of the squash event running alongside. Laura Stewart and Tracey Nicholls took the ladies' doubles, and the squash title went to Rob Sznajder, who also organised the event.

Then came table tennis. The game has been popular socially at the club for some time, and this season Abercorn entered a team in Division Five of the Edinburgh and Lothians League for the first time. Toryn Whitehead, John Sinclair and Zuzanna Chamielec responded with the best result of the opening week, beating Penicuik V 9-1 to go top of the table, with Toryn and Zuzanna both unbeaten.

John Sinclair, who led the move into league play, joked that the rules had changed since his last competitive match, but said it was great to find league table tennis played in such good spirit, with players of all ages. Chloe Madeley hailed the team as history-makers, saying the first chapter of Abercorn's table tennis story had been written.
